About Us Main Image

Urban Colony is a boutique showroom that is really about inspiration. The first impression you get when you step inside this "small on space but big on style" store is sophistication at affordable prices. Because so many of the items are custom designs by Robert Wylie, you will see new pieces every time you visit. The emphasis is on creating a vision for your space. Each new client may ask for a free initial consultation from Robert, where he will come to their home or office and help with design ideas, custom furnishings and solutions to decorating dilemmas. The result is a completely personalized experience to fit each person’s needs and individual tastes.

ABOUT ROBERT WYLIE:
Robert's start in the furniture business began in the 1980's, selling his mosaic tile on furniture creations off the back of his pick-up truck. When his work started appearing on film and television sets like The Tonight Show, he was besieged with commissions for custom designs including "The Sacred Sea Room" restaurant at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. In 1993, he started "Malabar Coast" with a friend, importing high-end antiques from Bombay. Later, wanting to create his own designs, he and a new business partner began "R&R Design Imports", sourcing goods & manufacturers throughout Southeast Asia for over a decade. During that time Robert really honed his furniture design skills and his customers, comprised of retail furniture stores & interior designers, became loyal fans of his work and eye for great finds.

After co-owning a staging business for a while, Robert realized that great style did not come as easily to everyone as it did to him. He opened "Urban Colony," originally in the HD Buttercup complex in Culver City, to sell upscale custom furnishings. Then in April of 2008 he moved to his current location in Sherman Oaks, sensing a niche to be filled for Valley residents "not to have to drive over the hill to find great style."
